On 30th June 2022, a team consists of eight architects from ‘Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB)’ and fifteen health professionals from ‘Ahsania Mission Cancer & General Hospital’ jointly visited Machimpur, Baishtila and Golapganj area of Sylhet. After the recent devastating flood, these areas have been affected on different levels and the team reached out to offer services in terms of spatial need and health related cases.
On June 30th, the team visited Kuri-para in Machimpur to observe current situation and plan next day activity. Representatives from IAB, Sylhet Center, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) & Leading University were present there and played significant role.
On July 1st, IAB team provided relief to 202 families in and around Machimpur area and the medical team had set a day long medical camp to serve around 300 patients (elderly, children, male & female) from the community. IAB team assessed the current housing scenario, drainage system, cultural aspects & other issues that can help developing the community further in future. Later in the afternoon, the team visited Baishtila area which has been flooded. The team observed local ways of living and how the flood has affected the place.
On July 2nd, the team went to Golapganj area. There, the medical team offered medical services to around 250 persons and IAB team assessed affected households in the area.
From these assessments, the team found out several local solutions and techniques that will be of help while designing more resilient households in the future.
